Responsible Luxury Lodge
Te Arai Lodge
Located only 1 hour 15 minutes from downtown Auckland you will find Te Arai Lodge, a luxurious and sustainable getaway in one of New Zealand’s most breathtaking landscapes.
Surrounded by over 20 acres of ancient podocarp forest and native bush, Te Arai Lodge sits on an elevated ridge with panoramic views across the rolling hills of the Brynderwyn Ranges and out to the stunning white sand beaches and surrounding islands of the Mangawhai coast.
This boutique luxury lodge was born from the passion and vision of Vince and Kathy Moores and their family who wanted to create a luxurious and authentic experience for their guests without compromising the environment. To do this the Moores Family have installed 42 solar panels on the property providing over 50% of their total energy needs. All rainwater is captured onsite, uv treated and filtered. All products and suppliers are curated to be as local and sustainable as possible. And the Moores family are working on a range of new initiatives including a cook book and becoming 100% plastic free. The lodge is strongly driven by a garden-to-table philosophy and there is extensive permaculture gardens, olive trees and bee hives throughout the property. Accommodation options range from a luxurious suite, cottage or modern barn style accommodation that you can combine, making it a great option for romantic getaways and small groups (up to 12 people) travelling together. And the hosts and owners have embarked on a long-term conservation project with a pest eradication initiative which has resulted in the regeneration of native birdlife, flora and fauna that now thrive in the region. Complete with a 20 meter saltwater heated pool, 3 outdoor baths, a mineral based cedar hot tub, an infrared sauna, a gym and yoga studio the lodge has everything you need for the ultimate relaxing and rejuvenating getaway. And with experiences like in house massage and yoga, world class golf, beach bike riding, surfing and one of the most spectacular hikes in New Zealand you will never be short of things to do. For your convenience, Te Arai lodge is also equipped with a couple of Tesla chargers and outdoor ports for electric car charging making it an unmissable stop for the eco-conscious traveller after a bit of indulgence.

Donkey Inn is sustainably cooled under a huge 600sqm living roof (believed to be the biggest in the southern hemisphere!) and is fully off-grid and energy efficient producing its own electricity via solar panels.
Set on three acres of alpine hillside in Queenstown, overlooking Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables range, Sherwood offers a unique setting to unwind, and reconnect with self and nature. This boutique hotel has recently undergone an intensive renovation, embracing a lifecycle approach to improve building performances, efficiency and increased comfort without creating unnecessary waste.
Sherwood is one of the largest private solar installs in New Zealand and the solar array is currently generating more electricity than the hotel consumes with the balance being returned to the grid. The hotel caters for independent travellers seeking atmosphere and authenticity. It has a large choice of rooms on offer to fit the needs of single, couples and families.
The hotel has an on-site restaurant serving fresh, seasonal soul food harvested from their own gardens, orchards and surrounding farms. They also offer yoga, pilates and meditation plus Ayurvedic massage, along with an ever-changing line up of live music, film, writers and artists in residence.

Conservation Focused Rural Stay
Blue Duck Station
Location: Ruapehu District
Located in the Ruapehu District on the banks of the Whanganui River and surrounded by Whanganui National Park, Blue Duck Station is an outdoor enthusiast’s sustainable playground.
The station offers multiple accommodation options from backpacker rooms to a very comfortable three bedroom self-contained house. Our favourite is the Frontier Lodge, the station’s newest accommodation, designed to have a minimal impact on the environment with ultra-thick insulation, thermally efficient glazing & an airtight building envelope. The station also has an on-site café.
Blue Duck Station’s core values are to conserve its endangered wildlife, increase the health of native bush and rivers, and preserve the history of the area, while educating visitors about the endangered New Zealand blue duck, other native species and local history.
