Day 1 – Queenstown to Glenorchy
Tour starts either from the Queenstown airport at 10:30am, or from the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Queenstown town centre at 11am.
For the first day of your trip we’ll meet you in Queenstown, the adventure capital of the world. You’ll be blown away by the scale of the scenery here – gigantic mountains, one of New Zealand’s largest and deepest lakes, and any adventure activity you can think of! Once we’re all together, and your guides have done their introductions, we’ll head to 12-Mile Delta for our first hike of the trip. This one is an A to B track through native beech forest, passing by some historic lime kilns dating back to the 1800s. We’ll have lunch today alfresco, on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, before 30 minutes of arguably the most beautiful drive in the world, along the lakeshore to Glenorchy, our base for the next four nights. Our accommodation, Camp Glenorchy, is a feat of sustainable engineering, and is a net-zero energy business. Our hosts will take us behind the scenes and give us insights into the finer details and innovations of the development project, you’ll be inspired! To finish the day, we’ll sit down together to enjoy a delicious Kiwi-style meal prepared by the talented chefs of Camp Glenorchy. Afterwards, if conditions permit, we’ll take a glance through a telescope at the Southern Cross and the Milky Way before retiring to our cosy cabins for a good night’s rest.
Accommodation for the following 4 nights: Camp Glenorchy
Includes Lunch, Dinner
Day 2 – Lake Sylvan and Mount Crichton Loop Track
This morning we’ll head out for a hike on the Lake Sylvan Track. Our journey takes us towards the famous Routeburn Valley, crossing the Rees and Dart rivers along the way. For our hike today we’re exploring the Dart River Valley. It’s an enchanting walk, amongst native beech forest. Keep an eye out for brown trout, and local birdlife along the trail. Parts of the forest in this area are regenerating following logging, and artefacts of the now defunct practices can be seen along the route.
This afternoon is our first chance to see a quintessential New Zealand backcountry hut, as we hike the Mt Crichton Loop Track. The trail passes by some breath-taking viewpoints of Lakes Wakatipu and Dispute, a stunning waterfall, and the historic, stone-built Sam Summers Hut. This evening we’ll enjoy another delicious dinner and relax in front of a film about New Zealand’s scenery, birdlife, and history hosted by Camp Glenorchy in the Humboldt Room.
Includes Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Day 3 – Section of the Routeburn Track
Today we’re ticking off a true bucket list hike – a section of the Routeburn Track. After a delicious hearty breakfast in the Homestead Building, we’ll take the scenic 40-minute drive to the trailhead. Crossing over swing bridges spanning the Routeburn River and winding our way through beech forest, the track passes by Sugarloaf Stream and Bridal Veil Falls. Our motivation today is the stunning views that await us when we reach the Routeburn Falls Hut – across to alpine meadows, the Humboldt Mountains and the Routeburn Falls cascade. We’ll re-energise with a delicious picnic lunch, top up our water bottles with some of the freshest water in the world, and wind our way back through the forest. On the way back to our accommodation we’ll stop by the quaint Mrs Woolly’s General Store, for a home-made fresh gelato sundae. Mrs Woolly’s is a great opportunity to grab a souvenir of your adventure in New Zealand. For dinner tonight, it’s a classic Kiwi barbecue of locally sourced meats and tasty fresh salads.
Includes Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 4 – Kayak Lake Wakatipu and Bike through Paradise
This morning we’re exploring the beauty of ‘the head of the lake’ – Glenorchy. This time we’re doing it with paddle in hand, on sturdy double kayaks. You can do as much or as little paddling as you like this morning, and conditions mean it is suitable for all ability levels. Take some time to reflect, and just listen to the splash of your paddle as you float on Lake Wakatipu. Once we’re back on dry land we’ll eat a tasty lunch, to fuel us for our afternoon bike ride at a place that’s really called Paradise! Our ride takes us along a series of quiet country roads – you’ll be able to take your time, listening to the birdsong, and imagine yourself as an extra in movies like Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Wolverine, The Lovely Bones, and Narnia, which were all filmed in the area. Keep an eye out for the namesake of the area, the paradise duck, which is most often spotted as a mating pair. The bus will meet you in Paradise, and we’ll head back together to Camp Glenorchy for our final farewell dinner, and it’s something special. We’ll be met at the Homestead Building by a local winemaker who’ll treat us to a private tasting and fascinating insights into the booming wine trade New Zealand is enjoying, before another delicious Kiwi-style meal prepared by the chefs at Camp Glenorchy.
Includes Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 5 – Glenorchy to Queenstown – Tour Ends
After a final and memorable breakfast at Camp Glenorchy we’ll head back along one of New Zealand’s most scenic drives, the Glenorchy-Queenstown road. Around 11am, we’ll drop you at a central Queenstown hotel if you haven’t yet had enough of New Zealand’s charm, or at the airport if you’re heading home. You’ll leave invigorated, fuelled by your experiences in the great outdoors, and no doubt with new friends you met along the way.
Pre and/or post-tours can be arranged to experience more of the South Island or to explore the Maori culture, pristine beaches and geothermal areas of the North Island!
